VERDURE: Wellness of Body, Mind & Spirit

Wellness is an individual pursuit we have self-responsibility for our own choices, behaviours and lifestyles but it is also significantly influenced by the physical, social and cultural environments in which we live.

Wellness is often confused with terms such as physical health, nutrition, exercise, weight management, wellbeing and happiness. While there are common elements among them, wellness is distinguished by not referring to a static state of being (i.e., being happy, in good health, or a state of wellbeing). Rather, wellness is associated with an active process of being aware and making choices that lead toward an outcome of optimal holistic health and wellbeing. Infact, it is a lifestyle and a personalized approach to living life in a way that allows you to become the best kind of person that your potentials, circumstances, and fate will allow”. Hence Wellness is :

  • An active process, a conscious, self-directed and continuous process of achieving full potentials as individuals.

Making the right choices for health and well-being can be challenging. Human behaviour is influenced by many factors, 2 of which are of particular relevance when it comes to wellness : self-regulation and habits.

  • Self-regulation is central to effective human functioning. It is “our ability to direct our behaviour and control our impulses so that we meet certain standards, achieve certain goals, or reach certain ideals”. It allows us to act in our short- and long-term best interests, consistent with our deepest values. There’s just one limitation: self-regulation requires mental energy, and the brain is always looking for ways to conserve energy.
  • Habits, in contrast, require very little energy. Technically, a habit is “a behaviour that is recurrent, is cued by a specific context, often happens without much awareness or conscious intent, and is acquired through frequent repetition” With the cognitive economy and performance efficiency of habits, the brain can conserve self-regulatory strength to focus on the important decisions in life, and free us to engage in thoughtful activities, such as reflecting on the past and planning for the future. Habits are powerful and in fact, are key to wellness. For better or worse, habits very much influence health, well-being, and quality of life. Studies indicate that once formed, habits become encoded in brain structures and can never truly be eradicated — only replaced with stronger habits.

Inserting new routines is not easy. But we can maximize the probabilities for success with 2 essentials : Self-awareness and Strategies. Both are indispensable to successful habit formation.

Self Awareness:

  • Change becomes much more achievable if you pay attention to who you are and insert routines that take advantage of your strengths, tendencies, and aptitudes. With self-awareness, you can cultivate the habits that work for you. It includes knowledge about other aspects of self as well, such as whether you are a procrastinator; under- or over-buyer; simplicity or abundance lover; finisher or opener; and familiarity or novelty lover, art or sports lover and so on. It also includes whether you are promotion or prevention-focused, optimist or pessimist and whether you like taking small or big steps.

Strategies:

  • Change also becomes more achievable if you choose strategies that enhance your chance for success. Such strategies include monitoring; scheduling; investing in systems of accountability; abstaining; increasing or decreasing convenience; planning safeguards; detecting rationalizations and false assumptions; using distractions, rewards, and treats; pairing activities; and beginning with habits that directly strengthen self-control. Most successful habit change requires the coordination of multiple strategies to establish a single new behaviour, and new habits, on average, take 60-66 days to form, so the more strategies used, the better.

Wellness is a dynamic, ever-changing, fluctuating process. It is a lifestyle, a personalized approach to living life in a way that allows you to become the best kind of person that your potentials, circumstances, and fate will allow. CHETNA GURUKULAM

CHETNA GURUKULAM is a dream come true for me. Last few years I have been dwelling on the idea of starting a free educational institution for less opportuned ones. But due to lack of supplement finances, I had to restrict to just donating educational aids to the needy students. However, the idea spark of starting a Gurukulam for children in India occurred to me while I visited Mount Kailash in mid 2019. Standing in front of the Kailash Parvat in a meditative mood, I had visions of the Almighty giving me instructions on what is to be done; which I believe is the purpose of my life on Earth.

The COVID set in unexpectedly which slowed down my pace as well. The two years of COVID, though unproductive financially; was highly productive intellectually. The outcome of rigorous brainstorming during that period is CHETNA GURUKULAM. By the grace of God, if I am able to implement Chetna Gurukulam the way I perceive it now, it would be a unique, ground-breaking and first of its kind in the world HOME for children.

CHETNA GROUP shall be established as an NPO (Non-Profit Organisation) and its CSR wing will establish CHETNA GURUKULAM.

VISION : EVERY CHILD is entitled to live their life with dignity and honour, get food, clothing ,shelter and education.

MISSION : To include every orphaned* child in our VISION.

*ORPHAN : In our definition, an orphan is not a child who have been abandoned at birth by their parents because they cannot look after them. For that purpose, there are lot of orphanages across the country taking care of that situation. By Orphan we mean children who have lost both their parents - ie. Mother and Father - in an accident, by fury of nature like floods, earthquake, Hurricane, Tsunami, Natural calamities/disasters and the like. Such children who are now dependent and at the mercy of their relatives. Such children who have had a beautiful life with their parents but now are at cross-roads without them for no fault of theirs.

It is a unique Project on its own and currently work is underway to get requisite sanctions from socio-legal departments, political and the government for implementing the same.
